Welcome to the facebook page of the Maasai Mara Science and Development Initiative (MMSDI).
Here you can follow our research initiatives and how they - hopefully - contribute to conserving the Maasai Mara ecosystem, its rich wildlife and culture.
A close dialogue with people living and working in the Maasai Mara conservancies and Narok County is vital for our research initiatives. Many maasais are on facebook using their mobile phone, so we hope to reach you through this site.

RESEARCH BASED CONSERVATION
Conservation interventions and management strategies tend not to be based on evidence and research based knowledge. This is widely recognized as the key weakness in conservation development. By working together with local conservation partners (like the Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservation Association and others), more than 60 researchers and international partners are now ready to develop an innovative and strong conservation effort in the Maasai Mara in order to save this unique place on Earth.
WHAT HAVE WE BEEN DOING SO FAR
At the Summit at Maasai Mara University in April 2015 we identified the many and complex challenges of the Maasai Mara by listening to community members and conservation partners. These challenges have been described in a report, which you will find at our website.
Since then we have been busy organizing and working out detailed research proposals to meet the challenges. A few teams have commenced field work in the Maasai Mara and the rest have been waiting for research authorization from the National Commission of Science, Technology and Innovation to operate in the field. This is now in place and a number of research projects will start in the coming months.
